HISTORICAL INFORMATION

The state Transport department was constituted in 1945 under the provisions of Section 133 A of the Motor Vehicles' Act, 1939. The department acts as the apex regulatory body that controls the entire gamut of activities that go into the operation of passenger & goods transport motor vehicles - both private & commercial. Through these regulatory activities, the department of Transport is one of the major revenue earners for the state exchequer.

The state of Uttar Pradesh has a motorable road network of 1.33 lakh kms, and is served by about 7400 buses of the state owned Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) on 475 routes covering a nationalised road length of about 25000 kms. Additionally, about 18000 private buses operate on 1290 private routes, covering about 75000 kms of the road network. These constitute the backbone of the passenger road transport sector of the state.
